Also known as Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, Halsey was born on September 29th 1994 in New Jersey. She is an American singer and songwriter. Her plan initially was to enroll in college to major in Fine Arts, but could not afford to, so instead Halsey enrolled in the local community college. There, she majored in Creative Writing. Her career started with doing cover songs, and one notable one was of Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' which was back in 2012. In 2014, she came up with a song, 'Ghost' which was on SoundCloud. It is there that many record labels realized her talent and wanted to sign her. She eventually settled on Astralwerks Label – U.S based, whose primary focus is on dance and electronic music. Her first extended play record was in the same year (2014) which was 'Room 93' and was ranked number 159 in the U.S Billboard 200 charts. In August 2015, she released a debut album – Badlands. It was such a huge hit, that within the 1st week, 97000 copies were sold in the U.S. One remarkable thing is that it was ranked number 2 in the U.S Billboard 200, number 2 in Australian albums, Number 10 at Belgian records, and number 3 in New Zealand Album Charts. Halsey began writing songs as early as when she was 17. In 2015, she was nominated for the People's Choice Award for 'Favorite Breakout Artist', NME Awards for the 'Best New Artist', and MTV Europe Music Award for 'Artist on the Rise'. In 2016, she won the 'Rising Star Award' by Billboard Women in Music. The award is usually granted to women who have inspired others and made a significant contribution. Her fan base increased tremendously when she performed magnificently at the South by Southwest Festival. As of early 2017, she had 3.8 million followers on Instagram and 3.9 million on Twitter.
